What is Motivational Interviewing?

According to Psychology Today, “Motivational Interviewing is a method that helps people resolve ambivalent feelings and insecurities to find the internal motivation they need to change their behavior. It is a practical, empathetic, and short-term process that takes into consideration how difficult it is to make life changes.”

Motivational interviewing is often used to help people change their behaviors when facing addiction and chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity, to name a few. Motivational interviewing is a good tool for people experiencing anger and/or hostility about their situation. It can help them move through emotional stages to find what is needed to motivate them to change.
